Julien Epaillard wins the CSIW5* KBC Bank & Verzekering with Donatello d’Auge
The CSIW5* KBC Bank & Verzekering turned into a class where speed made the difference. The jump-off offered plenty of opportunities to build up pace along the long lines, and those who dared to really go for it were able to make the difference.
Julien Epaillard clearly felt at home in this type of class and took the win with Donatello d’Auge. He produced a remarkably fast and fluent jump-off and, in a time of 38.34 seconds, stayed ahead of the field to claim victory. After the class, Epaillard explained that he deliberately went all in on speed. With eighteen combinations in the jump-off and a seventh starting position, he knew he had to attack from the start. Naturally quick and now highly experienced, Donatello d’Auge felt fresh and sharp. “My horse was really superb today,” Epaillard said with satisfaction.
The margins were small, however. Jules Van Hoydonck came very close with Minte van de Bisschop. His strong round in 38.96 seconds earned him an excellent second place, just missing out on the win but delivering a performance that certainly stood out in front of the home crowd. Bas Moerings completed the podium with Kivinia after another consistent and efficient round.
Epaillard was also full of praise for the atmosphere in Mechelen. He enjoys returning to Jumping Mechelen every year, appreciating the organisation, the crowd and the way both riders and horses are welcomed, which together make it an enjoyable competition week each time.

Looking ahead to the Grand Prix, he remains realistic but motivated. At this level, a single mistake can happen quickly, but Donatello is clearly in very good form. At the same time, Epaillard is well aware that the Belgian riders are always extra motivated to perform in front of their home crowd. “We’ll fight and try to do our best,” he said.
There is little rest in sight for Epaillard. The season continues straight into 2026, with a busy competition schedule starting again early in January. Almost every weekend brings another show, with the clear aim of staying sharp and competitive at the highest level. The CSIW5* KBC Bank & Verzekering once again showed just how small the differences are when speed, bravery and control come together in a single class.
